Four Maneuvers Every Snowboarder Should Know

Whether you are a beginning or experienced snowboarder, there are four maneuvers that you should know.

Edging. This maneuver involves putting pressure on the edges of your snowboard while you are moving to help you change directions more fluidly. Oftentimes, beginners have a habit of placing their weight on the middle of the board, but this makes changing directions very difficult. Instead, snowboarders should use their toes to balance their weight on the edges.

Skating. Important for when you are on a flat surface, skating is used when moving toward chairlifts and other locations on a flat area. To skate, you have your front foot attached to the board and use your free foot to move along the snow. Your weight will need to be on your attached foot, so you must be able to balance on that foot while skating.

Beginning your descent. Moving down a hill may seem simple enough, but it is still a process that you must learn. While at the top of the slope, move your body weight to your front foot to get yourself moving downward. Your back foot should be resting on the stomp pad and helping you maintain balance as you move.

Stopping. While some gentle slopes have a stretch of flat area to help you stop naturally, you won’t find it at the end of every trail. To stop your snowboard, you move your feet so that the board is facing perpendicular to the direction you were moving. This can be done by either twisting the front foot back or moving the back foot forward.
